A Crisis of Love

Beautiful God · Daniel 7

Daniel 7 shows a clash between two kingdoms: empires built on power over people, and a kingdom built on love that gives itself away. Jesus, the Son of Man, wins by serving, and the beast can show up in our everyday choices too.

Creation

Beautiful God · John 1:1–4; Genesis 1–3; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Why did God create? Not because he was lonely, but because the Father, Son and Spirit were already overflowing with love. Clothed first in light, then in skin, humanity is clothed in light again because God took on skin. Preached the week Jeremy's grandfather passed away.

The Dullness After the Drama

1 Kings 19:1–14

After fire from heaven, Elijah collapses. God meets him in a whisper, and calls us to a faith built on ordinary, faithful days instead of the next spiritual high.

Go and Tell

Everyday Disciple Making · Ephesians 4:1–16; 2 Timothy 2:2

No pastor can minister to everyone, and Jesus didn't try to either. Christ gives his church people, not just abilities: apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers, to equip everyone. Your fruit should grow on other people's trees.

The Heart of a Steward

Prayer before Communion · 1 Samuel 1:1–28; 1 Samuel 2:1–10 · From sermon notes

Hannah's waiting wasn't God ignoring her. It was God enlarging her heart from a consumer's to a steward's, until she could receive Samuel and give him back. Like the base of a great dam, the hidden years build the capacity to hold God's weight.

Your Malta

Empowered: Ordinary People, Extraordinary God · Acts 28:1–10; 2 Corinthians 11:25–30 · From sermon notes

Paul spent years aiming for Rome and washed up on a muddy beach in Malta. He didn't sulk. He picked up sticks, shook off a snake, and served. Ministry is mostly strategic stumbling, and God does his best work in our weakness.

Jesus Is the New Thing

New Beginnings · Isaiah 43:18–19; Luke 5:36–39; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Isaiah's "streams in the wasteland" never literally appear on Israel's road home, because the promise points beyond the exile to Jesus. He is the new thing. The question is whether our hearts are new wineskins, flexible enough to receive him.

A Movement, Not a Monument

New Beginnings · Isaiah 43:18–19; Numbers 21:4–9; 2 Kings 18:4

Israel turned the bronze snake, a symbol of God's healing, into an idol. We do the same with our methods and traditions. God is doing a new thing, and the work of God is a movement to be followed, not a monument to be protected.

The Infinite Infant God

Christmas · John 1:1–14 · From sermon notes

John's Christmas story has no shepherds or wise men. It goes back before the beginning. The infinite God became an infant so that the unapproachable God could be approached and the unknowable God could be known. His power isn't turned down. It's insulated.

What If Peter Prayed?

Cosmic Conversations · Matthew 26:31–46; Luke 22:31–32, 39–46; Revelation 5:8

Why is prayer so hard? The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. In Gethsemane Jesus prayed and Peter slept, and each fell to the level of his training. Even when we fall asleep in our Gethsemane, Jesus stays awake and prays for us.

If It Is Possible…

Cosmic Conversations · Matthew 26:36–39; Mark 14:35–36; Job 1:6–12; Genesis 18:16–33

If God is all-knowing, all-good and all-powerful, why pray? Seen through the cosmic conflict, prayer doesn't change God's heart. It changes what God can justly do. Prayer gives God permission to do what he already longs to do.

The Great Commission

Matthew Series · Matthew 28:16–20; Matthew 5:13

Back in Galilee, the risen Jesus hands his authority to imperfect disciples. Disciple-making is the metric Jesus cares about. It isn't something added to life but the driving force of it, so get the salt out of the shaker.

The Rich Young Ruler

Matthew Series · Matthew 19:16–30

The comparison game never satisfies, in the world or in religion. Jesus looks at the rich young ruler, loves him, and invites him to let go. In God's maths, losing everything is how you gain everything.

The Best Sermon Ever

Matthew Series · Matthew 5:1–12; Matthew 7:24–29 · From sermon notes

Every great leader has a vision, and Jesus cast his in the greatest sermon ever preached. The Beatitudes aren't commands to try harder. They announce who God's kingdom is already blessing, from brokenness to boldness, and they map out where to find Jesus.

The God of Forgiveness

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob · Genesis 32–33; Luke 15:11–32

Jacob, the master schemer, couldn't plan or bribe his way into forgiveness. He met God, admitted who he was, and walked away limping. Esau's embrace shows the Father's heart, and forgiveness received becomes forgiveness given.

The God Who Provides

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob · Genesis 22:1–14

God gives the promise before the test. His blessings rest on who he sees us as, not on how we perform. Worship means giving the gift back to the Giver, and God provides a sacrifice before he asks for one.

Choosing Pleasure or Pain

James 1:2–4; Proverbs 25:16; Hebrews 12:1–2 · From sermon notes

We numb ourselves with pleasure the way Jeremy once numbed his back pain with anti-inflammatories. James says there is joy in trials, because perseverance grows through them and because Jesus himself found joy on the way through the cross.

There's a Seat at the Table

Communion Sabbath · 1 Corinthians 11:17–34

In Corinth the Lord's Supper copied the status games of a Roman feast. Jesus' table reverses them. Communion first, conversion second. Jesus saved us a seat, so who will we make room for?

Gone Fishing

Luke 5:1–11

Peter's call shows that faith and convenience never go together, that faith grows by hearing God's word, and that Jesus is looking for apprentices, not just people who call themselves Christians.

Here Comes Heaven

Advent · Isaiah 9:2, 6–7; Matthew 2:1–12

Herod clung to his throne. The Magi stepped into the mystery. This Advent, will we let go of our expectations of God and let the infant King take the throne of our hearts?

The Rhythm of Mission

Acts 17:16–34

Mission isn't something we add to our lives. It's a way of seeing the family, work and community spaces we're already in, and it multiplies when we invest in one person at a time.

Behold, He Comes Again

John 3:26–30; John 14:1–3; Revelation 19:6–9

The Second Coming isn't a fear tactic. It's a wedding. Jesus has proposed, gone to prepare a place, and is coming back for the bride he loves, so don't unpack your suitcase in the hotel.

Finding God's Intention Through Tension

The Body of Christ · Romans 12:1–8

We can treat church like a blood bank: walk in, eat the snacks, give nothing. Paul calls a divided church to living sacrifice and unity, and unity isn't uniformity. It's harmony, and like a guitar string, we only make music under tension.

No Loopholes in Love

Show: Showing God's Love · 1 John 2:3–11

The old covenant way looks for loopholes and the minimum standard. The new covenant way asks, "What does love require of me?" Biblical perfection is growing in Christlike love.

The Missional Church

Acts 17:16–23

Churches should be more like airports, built for sending rather than keeping. Like Paul in Athens, every disciple is a missionary in their own sphere of influence, and multiplication beats addition.

I Am Anointed

14 Days of Prayer and Fasting · 1 Samuel 16:1–13

Anointing isn't for a select few. Through Jesus, the Anointed One, every believer receives the Holy Spirit, and it grows in us through humility and surrender.
